Good Saw, But Check The Fence
4 Stars
Good Saw, But Check The Fence
This is a good miter saw for the money, but I would strongly recommend immediately checking that the fences are parallel. DeWalt has (or had) a problem with their fence castings, and mine was bowed (see photograph). Unfortunately, I did not discover this for two years, since I was primarily cutting long boards, where the bowing did not show up. It was only when I started cutting small pieces that I discovered the problem.I took the saw to a DeWalt Service Center, where I found out that 1, the three year warranty on defective parts is virtually useless, since the manager accused me of abusing the saw, and 2, they are in denial about the problem. The service technician who ground the fence flat admitted that he had seen the problem multiple times but had “no idea how it got that way”. The manager claimed that the one piece aluminum fence would bend easily, so it must be my fault, but didn’t explain how the bolts to attach the fence still lined up perfectly and why the technician ground the fence to get it parallel rather than just bending it straight (I tried bending the fence straight, but it wouldn’t budge). They were going to charge me $110 to fix a $220 saw. I refused to pay it and kept insisting (loudly) that it was a factory defect. The manager finally agreed that the fix would be under warranty (just to make me go away, I am sure), but said my warranty for the saw would no longer in effect for anything. Since the saw has been perfect other than the fence, I was happy to agree. If the manager had not relented, I would have salvaged my blade, and left the saw there and simply bought another one.Anyway, if you check the fence with a straight edge as soon as you get the saw and it is not parallel, you can either return it or take it to a Dewalt Service Center where they will not be able to claim that you abused the saw.Other than the fence, this has been a reliable and accurate miter saw. I did buy a better blade (Freud LU88R012 Industrial Thin Kerf Fine Finish Crosscut Saw Blade 12 inch x 80t ATB 1 inch arbor) at the same time I bought the saw, which brings up a weird fact. The manual says to “always use 12" (305 mm) saw blades with 1" (25.4 mm) arbor”, but the saw actually takes a 5/8" arbor. An adapter is necessary to use a blade with a 1" arbor. An adapter was provided with the saw. If I had known this, I could have bought my replacement blade with the proper arbor size.

This is a super saw at a nice price. After more than two years of frequent use I am very happy with it. Five stars, easy. My grumbles are small, not enough to subtract a rating star.

Issues and comments:
#1--Grumble: The table of the saw was very slightly out of alignment with the saw arm. Although I took pains to square the blade to the table and to the fence there was something ever so slightly off. The first two years of use were mostly 1x and 2x lumber where the misalignment was too small to show up. A couple months ago I started some projects with fine moulding. The cuts were ever so slightly off, even though the blade was perfectly square to both table and fence. They were perfect at 45 degrees, too. I finally spotted the problem when cutting returns to finish some trim ends. The blade pushed very slightly to the left as it came down. It seems like the arm had a very small wander to the left, although it was impressively stable when tugged left and right to test it. I modified William Ng's 5-cut method for squaring the fence on a table saw sled. With a piece of 1x6 standing against the fence I cut at 90, then rotated the cut side down to the table and made another cut, etc. Check out his method on YouTube. The result was that the table itself was about 0.2 degrees out of alignment with the vertical path of the arm.

I tried the warranty approach and got shot down. When I bought this saw in 2014 the warranty was just 1 year, not 3 years as it is now. Also the service center seemed to think I had "abused" the saw and caused the misalignment. Fat chance, the saw was secured on a custom stand. It was never dropped, or banged around in a truck, etc. When I dismounted the saw from the stand for the trip to the service center, that was only the second time the saw was removed from the stand. DeWalt customer service was terrific but the service center stuck to their "abuse" theory. Anyway the old 1-year warranty had expired. After realignment ($60) the saw was perfect. So that's my tale of woe of you're interested.

#2 Grumble: Poor dust collection. Even with a strong vacuum connected there is a lot of sawdust whizzing out. Too much. There must be better configurations that capture much more dust without having to retrofit aftermarket gizmos that improve (but do not FIX) this design flaw.

#3 Comment: The throat in the table was typical for these saws. I opted for a modification with the
Aluminum Zero Clearance Insert (Z.C.I.) Plate for DeWalt 10" & 12" Non-Sliding Saws  from Infinity Tools, plus some spare inserts. The insert was easy to install and worked beautifully for the cut side in contact with the table. The back side of the workpiece still had tearout (unless I used a backer).

#4 Comment: I installed the
DEWALT DW7080 Extension System, for DW703, DW706, and DW708 . Currently it's recommended only for the DW703, DW706, and DW708. It is currently not recommended for the DW715. A couple years ago it WAS considered an accessory for the DW715. It installed easily and was helpful until I completed my own miter saw stand. No idea if the current DW7080 extension would fit a DW715 saw.

#5 Comment: Everything else worked great. The detents are very solid, precise, and accurate so cuts were reproducible. The table swung easily and locked firmly. Trigger control was solid with either hand. There's a bit of a screech on startup but that's pretty typical. The onboard wrench for removing and installing the blade is very handy. The carry handle works for a one-hand move. There's plenty of power to get through large boards of dense wood. Basically it's an excellent miter saw.

#6 Comment: DeWalt did an odd thing with this saw. There are three versions of the DW715. They did not go with 715A, 715B, 715C. No. You have to look carefully to see Type 1, Type 2, or Type 3. This is key when buying accessories. Triple check it. That's experience talking. (Mine is Type 3.)

If I did more carpentry I might prefer a double-bevel model with a sliding head and a 10" blade that's interchangeable with my table saw. But, I can't justify the expense. This saw has been a champion workhorse for thousands of cuts. At $200 it's a bargain compared to saws costing two to three times as much. If DeWalt improved the dust collection I'd give it six stars.

But do check that vertical alignment. No kidding, everything was perfectly square EXCEPT the vertical travel of the arm and blade. The error was too small to see until some fancy moulding revealed the problem.

I use this saw in my work. I cut aluminum extrusion all day long, some heavy wall tube and thick flat stock, and even break metal no problem. It has lot's of speed (4000 rpm) which is important, and its powerful. That's why I prefer this type of drive model, belt drives are only 3600 rpm. Always a good square cut, very smooth and straight cut. Dewalt has a very good design at the base allowing accurate and free up and down movement for the saw head. And it's tough. Notice also the heavier cast radius fence link that joins the two machined vertical parts of the fence. If a piece of material (kicks) It will not easily damage the fence alignment. This seems to be unique to this saw. This was not my first Dewalt saw and wont be my last. I have used this type of saw for at least 20 years on the job site. I expect I'll get 3-4 good years of HEAVY use out of this saw before doing any real maintenance on it. Always very happy with the operation and results it produces. Of-course make sure you are using the proper blade for the type of material your cutting. The blade that comes with it (a wood cutting blade), I set aside as a spare. In my case I needed a non-ferrous blade for cutting aluminum. Choosing the right high quality blade makes a world of difference with any saw. So don't go cheap on the blade. I do feel a slight vibration as I'm cutting thick wall aluminium tubing 3/16" - 1/4", but I think that vibration is the guard assembly which is supposed to be loose for free movement. The cuts are awesome, very clean and square so it's not mechanical. I bought this from Amazon when it was on sale black Friday week $179.00 (no tax and free delivery). It's back up to regular price now. There are fancier more expensive models, but the 715 will do the job really well. It will not accept a certain light kit, but, so what. I don't need a light mounted on the top to see where to cut. It probably wouldn't do much good in bright daylight anyway. That's not the way I have ever sited a cut on the material. In my book this saw earns a 5 star. I'm happy with it.

I am a basic DIY-er, not building custom cabinets or show piece furniture. I do basic carpentry around the house: framing, window & door moldings, crown moldings. The latter is probably the most complex "cut" I do. This saw came out of the box almost perfectly calibrated for 90°/90° cuts. Not quite perfect but almost. I did not buy a stand for it as I'm going to build my own on casters so I can move it around the shop easily and I'll set the deck of the saw to be the same height as my main workbench for supporting longer stock.

The factory blade does a decent job on 2x_ and 4x_ lumber, both treated and untreated. However I took the advice of other reviewers and also bought a finer tooth blade. I swap them out depending on the task at hand. So far. I expect I'll get lazy and just leave the nicer blade in there all the time. I had my 12-yr old daughter cut a treated 4x6 with the stock blade (with careful supervision and safety PPE) and she dropped the saw right through it like a warm knife through soft butter.

I wanted the 12" size to be able to cut "most" sizes of lumber I worked with. I do recommend it over 10". It makes the saw bigger of course but the extra Tim-the-Toolman factor is not overkill in this case. I did NOT go with sliding, nor double bevel, because I didn't want the saw to be overly complex for my needs, which would then make it harder to maintain and keep it calibrated over time. I don't mind flipping a piece as needed - - I am not in a hurry as I am not a professional. I also do NOT have a laser. I just mark my piece and line up the blade - - piece of cake.

I have only one small quibble. I hooked up a vacuum to the dust collector port and it still blows some saw dust out the back. It doesn't catch all of it in the "funnel".
