From the eager novice to the experienced player looking to experiment with a new instrument, the Performance Series delivers. Also features a Rosewood bridge and fretboard, black and white ABS rosette, open gear tuners and a natural high gloss finish. Comes factory tuned C, G, D, A. The Tenor guitar has been around for about 100 years and is considered a “transition instrument” between Dixieland Banjo and 6-string swing guitar. Recently its popularity has begun to rebound as contemporary artists have adopted the instruments unique sound. Tuned in 5th’s, it’s considered akin to the violin and mandolin family of instruments and can be played using the same scales and chord shapes. Nice instrument, sweet tone
5 Stars
Nice instrument, sweet tone
I am very happy with this instrument, especially for the price. The frets don't quite sit right in two places. and the nut is a bit high. I can get that fixed, right now I am breaking it in, actually an easy thing to do on this instrument. I have now added it to my collection of instruments which I take to gigs. These instruments include violin, viola, mandolin, mandola and accordion. The tenor guitar is a nice addition. I chose it because the tuning is like a viola, so I can find my way around the instrument.

I expected a decent instrument from Ibanez but this just blew me away. The tenor guitar is not a wildly popular instrument made in the millions like a regular guitar, it's kind of a rarity. That they can produce this quality in such an instrument is amazing! Years ago you had the choice between a poor quality import or a super-expensive Gibson or Martin. This is excellent quality for a ridiculously low price. Very well done Ibanez!

Note that this will not come set up, that is, with all the adjustments needed to make any instrument play its best. You should not expect that for this price. A proper set up by a skilled technician can easily add almost $100 to the price of any guitar. Fortunately, I have the experience needed for this, but if you don't you can have any good music store provide the service. I lowered the action, changed out the strings (factory strings always need replacing), and did the other set up jobs. I strung this like the top four strings of a regular guitar (DGBE) so it plays like a baritone ukulele. You have to put regular light guitar strings on to do this. Tenor guitar strings will break. Once everything was adjusted the way I like it the guitar was just perfect for me. Because of the nice big dreadnaught body it has plenty of bass response for this.

If you always wanted a baritone ukulele with metal strings, get this instrument and put the high strings of a guitar on it. Tenor banjo players will, of course, leave it tuned CGDA. Irish banjo players will prefer it tuned GDAE. It can handle all those tunings with the right strings. The various string sets needed are available here on Amazon.

One reviewer complained that the neck is very narrow. This is normal for a tenor guitar. It is a hybrid instrument developed in the 1920s for tenor banjo players. It's really a tenor banjo with a guitar body (or a guitar with tenor banjo neck, depending on how you look at it).

I received mine two days after placing the order and it arrived well packaged in perfect condition. There is no case included, but it will fit in a hard case for the Baby Taylor guitar or a 1/2 size guitar gig bag. Those are also available on Amazon from excellent sellers.

Again, great job Ibanez and thank you Amazon!

ADDED: After changing the strings to "Chicago tuning" (like the four high strings of a standard guitar) I needed to fill and re-cut one of the nut slots. This is because of the string change and isn't Ibanez's fault. The same thing can happen if you were to re-string it for Irish tuning or anything other than what it was originally set up for. But be aware of that if you plan on converting the instrument to an alternate tuning.

Love this tenor guitar. I’ve been playing a baritone uke but wanted something a little fuller sounding. I did change the strings for silk and steel DAddario guitar strings then tuned it to DGBE. I also adjusted the truss bar (little by little) counter clockwise because of slight vibration near the 1st and 2nd fret. Really fun to play
Reviewed in the United States on September 8, 2017
For the money this is a great little guitar. I would have given 5 stars had I been able to get the action exactly as I wanted it by adjusting the truss rod with the included Allen wrench. As I was adjusting the action down I felt the adjuster hit a "hard stop". I knew that cranking any further was inviting disaster. As it stands, the action is low enough to be plenty playable. The fit and feel is surprisingly good for such an inexpensive import. The finish is a heavy polyurethane that is thickly applied. This probably helps make the guitar durable, but the heavy finish combined with the instrument's all laminate construction and small body gives it a soft, muted voice when playing single note melodies. Fortunately, intonation is good up the neck. Speaking of which, the neck is thin like a tenor banjo's. Some guitarists may find this cramped but it keeps true to the TG's heritage as a cross over instrument for banjoists. As an Irish tenor player, I swapped the factory strings for the top 4 from a D'Addario EJ17 Medium set and string tension is about perfect for GDAE tuning. I am very happy with this little guitar as a travel instrument for playing softly in hotel rooms or in the house when the wife is watching TV.

For two bills, you would be hard pressed to find a nicer made instrument. The frets were protruding a bit but that is to be expected. The strings were tarnished but again, it has sat in a warehouse. They are going to be. A bit of set-up and a tuning and it plays fine, sounds good and looks very nice. I wish that the instruments available to me 40 years ago were so well made and at such a reasonable price. I love this thing I have dozens of instruments. Many by high-end builders. This isn’t one of those of course but it is well worth the money.

I love this thing. I've had it a week and it's quickly become my favorite. Came very well packaged from the seller, Adorama. Looks beautiful. Flawless finish. Sustain is great. It's plenty loud. The neck is narrow, but I like that about it. I haven't had a problem chording because of it. The intonation was spot on and the set up was great. Holds it's tune very well. (I have it tuned DGBE but it can be tuned to traditional tenor guitar tuning. It does have a trust rod and comes with an Allen wrench and an extra bridge pin. It's a fun little guitar and well worth $199.

I was pleasantly surprised when I pulled the Ibanez tenor guitar out of its box. No noticeable flaws in the finish, set up was good- ready to play with a tune up. The sound is full and deep, good sustain, and pretty loud. The wound strings had a little corrosion on them (I changed them the next day) and it could use better tuners. Otherwise, a good tenor guitar for the money. A gig bag would have been nice...

I love this tenor guitar. It sounds great, and is easy to play. I switched over to this from baritone ukulele and love the fuller sound.
Reviewed in the United States on June 30, 2022
When I first got this guitar I was frustrated with the way it played. I had to make some adjustments because it had a ring to it and sounded like a sitar and it always seemed out of tune when fretting. I have grown to like this guitar a lot more. I like the small neck and because it is very small and light is needs very light strings in order not to move it around. I had become a heavy handed player because of old guitars I was playing and this is a very delicate guitar with light strings. I had to learn to have a much lighter touch with this guitar and play on the fret so as to not pull it out of tune while playing. Experience with this guitar is the key to enjoying it. It's not perfect but for the money it really is an enjoyable instrument that has the look and feel of something much more expensive.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Guitar For The Cost
Reviewed in Canada on January 28, 2022
I have been looking for a tenor guitar for over a year now, the cost on this little 4 string was expensive but in the cost of tenor guitars it was quite affordable. The guitar itself was packed well and arrived in good time. After sitting in my home for a few days I tuned her up and this little guitar sounds amazing for the size. The body and neck are well made and the action is perfect. I am super pleased with my purchase and the only thing I have to fault is the cost of the guitar, but as mentioned this guitar was quite cheap for a tenor.
