Nice product in some respects, needs work in others.
3 Stars
Nice product in some respects, needs work in others.
It worked well for the first 3 minutes then the support straps pulled out of the plastic blade. I need to mention that I was trying to remove 3" of powder type snow at the time of the failure. The roof rake was not treated roughly in any way. This product has an inherent flaw in the way the straps are hooked to the blade. My other roof rake has a better connection for the straps, but I absolutely hated the handle/pole assembly with the multiple poles. I love the telescoping extension type pole method and how smoothly it extends and locks. The 21' reach was also very handy.I just hate having to re-engineer something within literally 3 minutes of usage that I have paid almost $45.00 for. I realize that we live in a disposable society, but 3 minutes is just not acceptable in anyone's book. (Has anybody else noticed the severe decline in product quality?)After 30 minutes and about $5.00 (8 fender washers, 2 1/4" bolts, 2 lock washers and 4 nuts) worth of hardware and it was back up and working better than when I unpacked it. I would have preferred to use stainless steel fasteners and lock nuts but I didn't have any available so I made do with what I had on hand. I could have returned this as defective but I really needed to clear my roof as the light snow was melting and creating ice dams on the leading edge of the roof.Just a word to the wise. This manufacturer needs to rethink inserting a small brass insert in molded plastic to attach a stress point on an item that is intended to be used in the cold and snow.I have attached 3 pictures of the rake after the failure and 3 of it after I retrofitted it to actually work.

Update 12/3/15 - Snow has arrived and I have used the rake three times, and as expected, the telescoping handle is a vast improvement over snapping together separate pole sections. In just a minute I have the rake fully extended or collapsed -- no fussing with it in freezing temperatures. It feels lighter to handle, and, an unexpected benefit -- the section closest to the rake has added flexibility. Normally a reasonably unwieldy tool, this flexibility increases maneuverability, agility. I can now more precisely position the rake. So it is performing better than expected. . .

A portion of my roof that faces north has a small overhang that causes a big ice dam issue. If I rake the roof as snow accumulates I can mitigate the problem. Snow rakes like this one are designed to be used on 3-4 inches of accumulation so a big storm may require repeated trips outside to re-rake the roof.

The last snow roof rake I purchased had snap in pole segments. And, although it did a great job pulling the snow down, the assembly usually needed to be accomplished while standing outside in a raging snow storm with frozen fingers popping in the pole segments. This part of using the rake was what I dreaded most, but this new telescoping pole version completely eliminates that issue.

The attachment system with this version is also more stable. The old version I had used wing nuts to attach the supports to the polycarbonate (plastic) rake and before each use they needed to be checked to ensure they had not loosened -- because they often had. This was an important step because if not secure the head had too much give which could cause the plastic to crack.

So, along with the pole improvement this new version uses small screws that are tightened with an included Allen wrench to attach the braces to the plastic rake. This is a system which appears less likely to loosen and will help maintain structural integrity. Assembly consists of attaching three screws to two braces and one nut -- and all necessary hardware is included.

I bought this rake as soon as I saw it because this is the brand I've been using and have been pleased with, but I also know from experience that it is best to purchase before the first big snow storm or it may be out of stock. If I encounter problems after using the rake I will update the review. .

We live in Minnesota and I have a 14 kVA solar array. It doesn't make any money covered with snow, so I bought this roof rake. It works perfectly. The rigid plastic blade pulls the snow off easily and doesn't scratch the panels. It adjusts easily, even with gloves on, so you can clean the top half, the come back and clear the lower section. I an sure it would work equally well on any roof. Very easy to use, as light as practical, and sturdy.

Being a new solar array owner I never thought about tools I might need to maintain the panels. This last snow we had is still hanging around after two week, completely covering the panels. I thought about using my chimney flue brush to clean the panels but realized the metal bristles would scratch the panel fronts. Bought this tool and it's worked out very well. I have to push as well as pull based on where the panel is located. No problems either direction.
Like others I had issues getting everything to line up so as to secure the long bolt since the braces were not properly manufactured. Put the short ends in a vice and bent the brace ends about 5 degrees. Everything lined up perfectly after that. The other issue was the exposed end was jammed into a foam block, possibly during shipping, forcing the pole end into the plastic handle knob. Took a bit of tugging and twisting but was able to free it. All of the handle knobs secured the poles easily, no channel locks necessary.
Called customer service to let them know of the issues I encountered and got blown off. On hold now for round two...8). Spoke to a much nicer agent the second time and she assured me she would pass my comments along.

Hubby bought this for our solar panels. It extends pretty long. When its extended, its a lil wobbly, but that's because it has two different areas to make it longer. Must tighten it well, or the snow (when u push it off of the panels), if wet, will push the shovel bars back down, making it shorter. Over all, good product, just some helpful hints ;-)

As advertised the product is lightweight, has an easy to use telescoping handle, and does a good job digging in and pulling snow off the roof.

I used it first after about 10 inches of light, powdery snow fell. I was able to clear about 80% of the snow off my steeply pitched, two story metal roof using Joe and a stepladder. Over the course of the following two days, another 10 inches of snow fell but this time it was very wet and heavy. By the time I got off work and pulled out Joe, the snow had developed a crust.

Still, Joe did a good job breaking through that crust and pulling large chunks of snow/ice off the roof... until Joe's head snapped off right at the point where the bolt for the cross braces passes through the pole. It was a nice, clean break, clearly showing that the point where the cross braces attach could use a little reinforcement.

Since there's no way to reattach the head now I am left with a snow rake with a six inch reach and a 20.5 foot long poking device. If there are any Friends fans out there that need to check if ugly naked guy is still alive, let me know. I'll be happy to lend you the poking device so you don't have to fashion your own.

Wear a hat when using this shovel.

It works great to pull down roof pile ups.

Word to the wise...use this or any roof shovel before too much snow piles up.

Snow weight on a roof is not great. This tool helps to avoid ice build up.

Our new garage has a metal roof that slopes toward the service door and one of the garage doors. The Snow Joe with a plastic blade extends sufficiently and clears well without scratching. It also works well to clear icicles from the high gutters on our house. It is a bit wobbly when extended, but not excessively. The vendor mistakenly shipped the version with a metal blade first, and that was returned for the correct version with a poly blade.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nice Long Rake
Reviewed in Canada on January 10, 2020
I bought this rake to clear the snow off of my solar panels. The tool is sturdy, well made and has a strong blade and extends super long. The locks on the extending handle are large and work well with gloves on. It is rather heavy when fully extended and the handle bows if you try to lift the full length from one end. This is not a real issue as in use, the rake stays on the roof and supports itself well. One important thing to keep in mind when using a long roof rake - you need to have plenty of room behind you for the handle as you pull the snow off the roof.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must have snow removal tool & GREAT customer service
Reviewed in Canada on February 22, 2024
I'm a 60 year old widow & live alone in a 2 storey older home. This roof rake is a BOON when clearing deep snow off the lower 2 roofs. Easy to put together, lightweight, fairly easy to lob onto the roof. For the kitchen roof which has a deck to the front its a bit of a jiggle when pulling the rake towards me as the handle (fully extended) needs to either go over the hand rail or between the rails. Not a big problem, just a heads up. Also I just lost 1 of the tiny screws that holds the head in place. Of course the local hardware store doesnt have them & as Im in Canada - when I look online - I can see there are replacement packs containing all the 6 or so tiny pieces of hardwear plus the spanner for about C$6. But Amazon.ca is out of stock & if I was to buy from the US the shipping is a ridiculous US$50!!! So I called the SnowJoe customer service free phone number - WOW! They were fabulous! They are sending me FREE the hardware pack. She just had to register my serial number - which really I should have done when I bought it - & I then had to send her my amazon invoice. She asked for my serial number but when I checked the label that held it had worn, but she managed to work it out. I bought it in Oct 2022 - so 17mths later & its still under warranty. So happy! So if you buy one of these be sure to register under the warranty & know that if you loose a tiny screw - or if something goes wrong - their customer service is 5*

Really found this tool useful, the only thing I would change is the screw down lock nuts. They get moisture in the threads and freeze, making it impossible to adjust the length without thawing the locking nuts first. Other than that little inconvenience, it’s a great tool for removing snow.
