A portion of my roof that faces north has a small overhang that causes a big ice dam issue. If I rake the roof as snow accumulates I can mitigate the problem. Snow rakes like this one are designed to be used on 3-4 inches of accumulation so a big storm may require repeated trips outside to re-rake the roof.
The last snow roof rake I purchased had snap in pole segments. And, although it did a great job pulling the snow down, the assembly usually needed to be accomplished while standing outside in a raging snow storm with frozen fingers popping in the pole segments. This part of using the rake was what I dreaded most, but this new telescoping pole version completely eliminates that issue.
The attachment system with this version is also more stable. The old version I had used wing nuts to attach the supports to the polycarbonate (plastic) rake and before each use they needed to be checked to ensure they had not loosened -- because they often had. This was an important step because if not secure the head had too much give which could cause the plastic to crack.
So, along with the pole improvement this new version uses small screws that are tightened with an included Allen wrench to attach the braces to the plastic rake. This is a system which appears less likely to loosen and will help maintain structural integrity. Assembly consists of attaching three screws to two braces and one nut -- and all necessary hardware is included.
I bought this rake as soon as I saw it because this is the brand I've been using and have been pleased with, but I also know from experience that it is best to purchase before the first big snow storm or it may be out of stock. If I encounter problems after using the rake I will update the review. .

Like others I had issues getting everything to line up so as to secure the long bolt since the braces were not properly manufactured. Put the short ends in a vice and bent the brace ends about 5 degrees. Everything lined up perfectly after that. The other issue was the exposed end was jammed into a foam block, possibly during shipping, forcing the pole end into the plastic handle knob. Took a bit of tugging and twisting but was able to free it. All of the handle knobs secured the poles easily, no channel locks necessary.
Called customer service to let them know of the issues I encountered and got blown off. On hold now for round two...8). Spoke to a much nicer agent the second time and she assured me she would pass my comments along.
I used it first after about 10 inches of light, powdery snow fell. I was able to clear about 80% of the snow off my steeply pitched, two story metal roof using Joe and a stepladder. Over the course of the following two days, another 10 inches of snow fell but this time it was very wet and heavy. By the time I got off work and pulled out Joe, the snow had developed a crust.
Still, Joe did a good job breaking through that crust and pulling large chunks of snow/ice off the roof... until Joe's head snapped off right at the point where the bolt for the cross braces passes through the pole. It was a nice, clean break, clearly showing that the point where the cross braces attach could use a little reinforcement.
Since there's no way to reattach the head now I am left with a snow rake with a six inch reach and a 20.5 foot long poking device. If there are any Friends fans out there that need to check if ugly naked guy is still alive, let me know. I'll be happy to lend you the poking device so you don't have to fashion your own.
It works great to pull down roof pile ups.
Word to the wise...use this or any roof shovel before too much snow piles up.
Snow weight on a roof is not great. This tool helps to avoid ice build up.
