For The Price? A Few Issues But Not Bad.
I spent my own money and no one gave me a discount or any consideration for writing this review. If anyone WANTS to give me free stuff to write reviews I'll definitely consider it, however. After spending about four hours playing around and setting up my new RCA Viking Pro 10" Tablet, here are a few thoughts.PROS:-The ten inch size is quite nice compared to the 8 inch I've had previously.-The screen isn't fantastic, but the image quality is overall just fine.-The version of Android 5.0 that RCA uses on this is surprisingly free of bloatware. Walmart/Sams Club and VUDUare the only "useless" apps that are present, and those are easily removable.-Setup was simple without having to go through a lot of hassle. Wifi connected straight away, Bluetooth connected quickly. I'm not seeing any lag time changing screens or apps.-The keyboard is surprisingly well made and the latch to connect screen to keyboard is MUCH beefier than I expected.-After reading all the reviews of the cameras on this device I was expecting them to be much worse. I didn't buy these expecting hi-def and they most certainly aren't but the rear camera will certainly work well enough for a quick snap. The front facing camera isn't very good, but it's certainly functional as well.-I've added all my "must have" apps and a few testing apps that require a lot of horsepower to operate and thus far they have all worked. I have seen one or two apps in the store that don't run, but I believe that has to do with tablet compatibility more than device compatibility issues. But for me it's doing what I want it to do.-The touch pad works pretty well but could use an input button. There is also no way to turn off the touchpad functionality, so if you are a person who types with your hands resting this may be an issue for you.CONS:-This tablet will charge through USB BUT WILL NOT CONNECT TO A PC! I'm absolutely floored that there is no way to transfer files via USB onto this tablet. It's not a deal breaker because it does read USB thumb drives and externally powered disc drives. And there are wireless solutions available as well, but direct USB connection seems like a basic function.-It could be consider both a pro and a con but I find the USB connections to be EXTREMELY stiff and difficult to connect to. I assume this will improve over time.-As I stated earlier the keyboard functions well and seems well made but for some reason the layout is designed with the right shift key placed in a very awkward position (see photo). Oddly the left shift is in the normal position and size. This layout makes it almost inevitable that you will hit the ".com" shortcut key instead of the shift. In the future RCA should consider swapping the shift and the ".com" keys.-It would be VERY nice if the manufacturer would spend a few more cents and make the power cord 5-6 feet instead of 38 inches.-The one solitary speaker on the tablet is pretty wretched. Very tinny. I would advise external speakers or headphones.-One thing I would like to stress is that the manual states to make sure to hold the power button down until you see the RCA logo come up on the screen. I gave the power button a quick tap (less than a second) and it resulted in the screen powering on but no function from the unit. I had to press and hold the power button for a number of seconds before the screen powered down and I could restart the unit. I would imagine others have done this and thought the tablet had gone non-operable. MAKE SURE to hold down the power button when starting!I tend to shop and compare quite a bit when I'm about to make a purchase, particularly when it comes to electronics. I was looking for a low end tablet for occasional use when away from home. For the price the RCA Viking 10" 2-in-1 is quite a good deal. It's not a high end tablet, it's not going to perform as well as a high end tablet. But if you are looking for something economical and functional it looks like this one is hard to beat IF the cons I've outlined above aren't dealbreakers for you.The real question at this point is going to be reliability. Time will tell. I will come back and do an update to this review after I've had more time and real world testing on it.EDIT: 10/02/16 - After five months of use and a cross country trip here are a few more thoughts. As I said earlier, do NOT expect an expensive tablet if you purchase this! I've noticed some slowing and odd behavior but for the most part it's done what I've expected. I can watch video, some light web browsing, email and some low requirement games. The biggest disappointment and shock was finding out that this table cannot be connected to a computer for file transfer unless you purchase a proprietary cable from RCA...for an additional $20. That is RIDICULOUS! And took one star away from my initial 4 star review. File transfer between a tablet and a PC is one of the most basic functions I would expect out of ANY device! Ridiculous! If you can find this under 100 dollars, and you only need a light duty tablet for occasional use, it's worth the price. Over 100 dollars? Look elsewhere.
