In terms of use, I love the remote control, and the fact that you can set a temperature and it will stay there. With my old AC my room was either a meat locker cold or boiling hot. There was no comfortable in between. With this unit, I wake up in the morning and my room is just perfect, even on the hottest nights. (I usually set it to 71 or 72 degrees at night.)
There is only one con that I have found so far. The economy mode is the default when you turn the AC on. Economy mode means that the fan turns off when the thermostat reaches the proper temperature. At night, this means that the fan will cycle on and off throughout the night, which is annoying. I wish the default was the cool mode, in which the fan stays on. Much better for sleeping at night, and since this is in a bedroom, makes more sense since we are rarely in there during the day. Switching modes isn't hard, though... it is just a matter of remembering to do it before drifting off to sleep.
Overall, we are pleased with our new AC.
Edited in June 2021: AC is still going strong! Works perfectly cooling my room. All I have done is clean the filter a couple times a season and it is working great. Highly recommend.
Installation came off without a hitch, even in my unusually small BR windows. Instead of using the added fins on both sides, we only used the left side.
Ive been using it in "economy" mode since my purchase, and its done just fine. The digital readout is also great since you can more closely set the exact temperature you want. Admittedly I havent used the remote control...perhaps someday I will try it, but havent found a real need for it.
It may do this in other modes, but I have found in the power-saving mode, once its finished cooling and shuts down, it will periodically turn on again, perhaps for 10-15 seconds or so. And it will continue to do this every so often until its time to fully power up and cool the room down again. My guess is this is part of its defrost mode, or perhaps a cycling to discourage frost-up inside the unit. In any case, I dint find it bothersome, but some might.
A final note about it engaging its compressor. It does a little bit of a jump when this happens, usually when the compressor turns off. We have 2 units brand new, and they both do this. Its not terribly unnerving, however it can be noticable. I will say its never woken me up at night, but do keep in mind I also have white noise in the background as I sleep.
UPDATE 10/26/19
Both units continue to run perfectly fine, 3 years later. Only maintenance has been wiping the filter of dust and cat hair. I started using the remote this past season and really enjoyed the convenience. For those who say it didn’t work, stopped working, was too loud or didn’t cool properly, ours get an A+ (both of them, we bought 2).
My unit arrived in noticeably damaged packaging (one side of the box nearly torn off), but there was no damage to the unit except a couple of very minor dents in the rear radiator fins (not uncommon, since they're so delicate) and a slight dip in the upper case as if something weighty was stacked on top of it during shipping. These were minor cosmetic issues. Everything functioned fine.
Upon plugging in the unit, I was impressed by how easily and quickly the unit responds to input from the uber-convenient remote. Press power and the LCD immediately lights up with the current setpoint temperature. The fan also starts up immediately, though it takes approximately 2-4 minutes before the compressor kicks in. Likewise, adjusting the setpoint up or down, changing the fan speed from high to low, or switching from cool to energy saver mode is instantaneous at the press of a button. And although the remote seems to be line of sight (infrared signal), I found I could point it away from the unit with my body partially in between it and the unit at close distance but still get a fairly reliable response. So for small rooms, the remote is a definite convenience that works great.
With the fan running at low, the unit emits a moderately loud "white noise" sound that is very similar to the rush of air sound from the typical A/C units in a motel. Turn it to high and the sound gets louder, but stays in the white noise range, with no distinctive or "sharp" sounds that would wake a sleeping person (assuming white noise doesn't bother you when you sleep, of course). The noise is loud enough that it would drown out whispers, but you don't need to raise your voice to any perceptible degree to be heard over it. Some people, myself included, will even appreciate that the white noise will help to drown out or smooth over sounds outside, especially if you're installing this in a boat or RV, or in a small room in the city, where there might be people or traffic noise outside. Don't expect a "whisper quiet" softness. Expect it to feel like the "rushing air" sound of a typical car A/C vent on high, but without any rattles or whines or other obnoxious sounds added in.
When the compressor kicks in, which will vary in duration and frequency based on the room temperature and setpoint, there is a very low hum that is similar to many full-size kitchen refrigerators. It is not off-puttingly loud in my opinion, but someone sleeping very near to the unit might wake up at the sound if they are a light sleeper sensitive to any change in noise. Still, I haven't come across any window unit in this range that is quieter, so it meets my expectations and is certainly not as obnoxious as many similar-sized units I've experienced.
The size and weight are very manageable, as this is one of the smallest window units you're likely to find. In spite of its small size and relatively low noise, the cool air blows out well enough that I can feel a slight breeze on my skin about six feet away, even on the lower fan setting and in energy saver mode. In fact, the vents are more effective than I expected at blowing and directing the flow of air into the room. I've seen other units that are so anemic you can barely feel even when you put your hand by the vents, so this was a pleasant surprise.
The filter for the room air intake is simple to access and clean. It simply slides out of the right side of the unit (as you face it) and back in again. No issues there that I see, though I haven't run mine long enough to get it dirty to the point of needing to be cleaned.
The cord is adequately long to reach down from a window to an outlet, but you will need the outlet to be positioned directly under or very near to the window, or else you may have to extend it.
The weight is around 40 lbs. (I haven't actually put it on a scale) and relatively easy to lift into or out of a window. Much easier than any of the larger units, as this is about as light as window units get.
The constructions seems decently durable, although not "rugged." The fins in the back are very delicate, so you must always take care (with any A/C unit) not to push on, kick, or otherwise strike that surface or you'll inevitably bend over some of the fins which reduces efficiency. The panel on the front has sealed push buttons that I've seen crack on other types of devices that use these, but perhaps these are more durable. I'm not sure, but I'll make most adjustments with the remote, so this is a non-issue for me.
All in all, this is exactly what I expected it to be. Build quality could be slightly better (I don't know why these units don't include a more robust grill on the back to protect the delicate radiator fins), but it seems up to the task and only time will tell how long it stands up to the elements and daily use. I'll be installing this on a houseboat to cool approximately 120 sq. ft. (with a lower ceiling than a typical room). I think if I insulate the space well, this will be well up to the task.
If you're looking for an efficient, small, reasonably quiet, 5000-BTU window unit with the added convenience of a remote (so you can turn it on/off and adjust it without leaving your seat or bed), this is probably the single best choice on the market, especially for its sub-$200 cost.
I wish this unit was currently available so I can order another one for an extra bedroom. All I do is clean the air filter 2x a season. It cools my 12x15 room fine.

Also one thing I didn't like was the box that it came in seemed to be banged up a bit. I inspected product inside and everything looked alright and wasn't broken so as the term goes " if it ain't broke don't fix it "
