Compared to a TomTom unit I have, I like the Garmin better. It gets traffic updates very fast, and they are usually pretty reliable, though not always 100% accurate. This unit does not get traffic data on most secondary (i.e. non-freeway) roads, so it might underestimate the traffic conditions and hence travel times if you are using back roads.
Otherwise, I find the unit to be fairly user friendly. The touch screen works well. The directions it gives are usually accurate, though on occasion does not give you the optimal route (like every other GPS navigator unites I've used). I was able to import motorcycle routes and my cross country trip route via Garmin's basecamp free software. Basecamp is a bit kludgy and takes a while to figure out (watching a couple how-to videos help) but does the job. There are other alternative software options, but I cannot speak to them.
The battery, which is not designed for long term use, worked fine on the refurbished unit I received, after I charged it. Once charged, it took about 90 minutes to download updated maps from Garmin, which I accomplished without incident. There were no indications of prior use -- it looked like a new unit. Heck of a deal for about $100 off the price for a new one.
To use this on a motorcycle, I bought a handlebar mount I found on Amazon. I sealed the edge of the screen with clear silicone sealant, as is described on various youtube videos. I have not tried it on the motorcycle yet, but will report my experiences later. I have been using it about a month, so I cannot speak to its long term reliability.
Update 3/4/20: We completed a 4 1/2 month, 20,000+ cross country motorcycle trip. The biggest problem with this unit is that it was stolen off my bike and I had to buy another. Otherwise, the unit (with my waterproofing, see above) was very reliable. There were a couple times it got "lost" -- taking us on back roads that lead nowhere. But most always it got me to the destination and was instrumental in providing guidance on the trip. I'll take it on my next trip too.
It worked ok in Montreal, it did get me to my destination which was great. Since then using it back here in VT/NH/Mass it has been a joke. I will have my cell phone on Waze or Google Maps and the routes this take me on is definitely scenic or back roading. I've tried playing with the settings and nothing will make it match up to the smarter routes like Waze or Google Maps. I was out towards Stratton Vermont with a trailer on my truck and it took me up a dead end road. That was fun backing down! I have zero faith in this besides interstate use. Just yesterday I went to a neighborhood in a town in NH and it wasn't even close to the address entered. My good old cell phone got me to the house.
This was a complete waste of money. I guess if you are in a metropolitan area it might be good. But here in VT/NH/Mass, its been 100% useless.
I was surprised that this newer Garmin was not really an improvement over my 10 year old Garmin. It has the same problems with routing and the same type of map errors and more. It will send me on a bad path and not show intersecting roads that have been there for decades. It knows the names of roads that I didn't know had names and doesn't know about roads that are 10-years old. It should be considered a second form of navigation rather than your primary navigator. The included library of shopping is wrong more than it's right and will waste your time. Know the address before you go or you'll be nowhere. Watch the signs before you trust the navigation.
That being said, it's better than the competing products and easy to use.
