It has two settings, high is louder but it's not 'loud'. I quite like the white noise, actually, and have no problem sleeping with it on high. Low is near-silent. Yes, it has a blue light that's on whenever the machine is on, this helps me remember to turn it off. There is a plastic-y smell when you first run it, and it was gone by day three. It's been highly effective and helped me so mich with my allergies and asthma. I love it. Very reasonable. Good quality. Zero complaints whatsoever and their staff is fantastic.

It is however very bright and the light can be covered with a headband, but the base still glows. Great for daytime use, but not recommended for night use if one requires complete darkness to sleep (like me). But you could always get an eye mask.
