Not bad, not at all a W49.
4 Stars
Not bad, not at all a W49.
The review questioned if it was warm? Haha no. I retired my Western 49 to save as a pass it on. While the cold steel is an hommage to it in so many ways, they are not even close. The cold steel is much bigger, heavier and slightly off centerline. While a good type bowie knife and close replacement I just couldn't use it. Because the blade is much bigger the handle to blade transition is awkward,. It feels like the handle is almost too small for this blade. It looks oddly like a weak spot . A small handle to a big blade. Because the blade does not transition to a near equal ratio I feel hesitant to press it for chopping much, only because the W49 is nearly flawless in this regard the Cold steel not quite the replacement I need. Pros, as a Bowie goes it meets all the criteria. Big enough to chop with, can be used as a small sword, sharp enough to clean and process food and game and the "S" guard is well anchored. Just not what I wanted.

For a very short time I carried pistols and handguns. They became cumbersome and made me nervous thinking at any moment it could fall and go off killing or hurting someone severely. So I switched to carring knives and most importantly this Cold Steel Wild West Bowie. It's lightweight, sharp, and I can deploy it with confidence without the sheeth tied to my thigh. It is however impossible to conceal unless I put on a trench coat. Who wants to do that! Lol. I would recommend this knife to all of those considering switching from carrying and concealing guns to knives to buy something with girth, weight and good quality steel. This is your baby.

Fit is tight, finish...a little wipe with a polishing cloth... looks great. A few strokes on a ceramic sharpener....paper is slivered, tomatoes too.. Dangler sheath on my belt....it fits great sitting in my Lazy boy, gets out of your way. Suggestion....
if you're single, buy it....good value at +/- $90 bucks. If married,....don't even think about it. It's a 1 & 1/2 pound blade! At my 5'10" height, it hangs to my knee. Think hard about its usefulness for you.
Seriously...seems excellent value for your dollar. I bought mine just to round out my collection. (Every one of which will slice tomatoes. ) I got mine because I could....is it necessary for you, or just fun?
PS...Leg tie lanyard has a "hangman's" knot. It is a separate piece, glued in place and can be unwrapped. I used a nail to pick it apart. 550 paracord fits just fine in the lanyard holes, handle and sheath.

This is probably my favorite Cold Steel knife. Its not delivered with the best presentation and the sheath is GARBAGE that will fall apart within a few weeks of wearing it.

This is probably biggest wieldable bowie around. This thing is just huge. I'm 6'3" 300lbs and it actually doesn't look like a toy in my bear sized-hand. While my Trailmaster in San Mai is still my go to functional knife, this is fun and looks beautiful. The rosewood handle is well made and comfortable in a large hand. It does come packaged drowning in some shitty brown oil that stains the brass, so be prepared to use some brass cleaner to get it shined up.

It's also not the sharpest out of the box, though it will cut paper with some finesse. I would definitely recommend putting a steeper angled edge on it. In short, prepare to put a little work into it if you actually want to use it as more than show piece.

All of that said, If you've got a nice bowie collection and always felt that they just fall short of that Dundee "that's not a knife" moment, this is the knife for you. If anything, you'll be able to tell the crocodile man himself that his knife isn't a knife. Cheers!

Heavy, solid, and sturdy. The handle is secured well and comfortable. The sheath is the only weak point, as it’s a bit loose and the leg strap is all but useless, but that’s not what you’re buying it for, is it? If you’re looking to fight off a crocodile or tame the western frontier, this knife won’t let you down.

I got this as a gift to give, and the thing was sharp! Others said it was not too sharp or dull, but this sliced open the thick cardboard box it came with like it was made of soften butter. So buyers beware this knife is a proper knife! Handle with care.

This will be a review and comparison of both the Cold Steel Wild West Bowie and the Condor Undertaker, I’ve received and handled both from Amazon recently.

Wild West Bowie:
*Looks and feels more stout but also handles slower.
*Wider handle, I wear medium gloves and this was not quite the perfect fit for my hands. Also had enough space for an extra finger underneath my grip. Definitely a better grip for L and XL hands
*Better symmetry in grind on both sides of the blade, pretty nicely polished
*Dull, very dull, completely blunt near the choil. I only have a couple stones and given the 1090 steel, I quickly realized the blade would need too much work to make sharp. Would not cut paper

Condor Undertaker:
*Relatively sharp, did not need much work to cut paper
*Better/thinner grip for my medium sized hands, quicker to slash with too, easily faster to move with than the Wild West Bowie
*Big belly, bites deep into wood
*Sheath is tight as others have mentioned but I’m sure it’ll wear in nicely, not concerned
*Uneven grinds on blade and handle, it’s pretty bad, Wild West Bowie fit and symmetry is quite better

I just received the Wild West Bowie, and as much as I like the knife, I dislike the amount of oil it was covered in; it made Exxon Valdez appear a minor drop in comparison.

It's big and hefty and will undoubtedly perform well, once I get a decent edge on it, that is... it's as dull as a 29 year old sloth on barbiturates! (it's life expectancy is 20-30 years). Out of the probably 100 Cold Steel knives I have, this is by far the worst edge I've ever received! QC failure of epic proportions.

I just keep buying Cold Steel blades because that keep attracting my interest. I have so many and none has disappointed me. Even with all of the large knives I have I still wanted this one and I'm glad I purchased it. I still bought the Trail Master after this purchase.

1.0 out of 5 stars Keine Schönheit, schlecht verarbeitet und überteuert.
